Hundreds of Dutch Dance hopefuls will get a first look Thursday at costumes for the Holland's Tulip Time Festival. The annual Dutch Dance Style Show is Thursday at Evergreen Commons. Peg Jipping, Holland High costume director, said the show gives dancers a chance to view their options.
"Some of the girls come and already know what they want," Jipping said. "But it's always my hope that they come open minded because they don't always get their first choice." Jipping said additional fabrics will give dancers the chance to make each costume unique. There are new choices this year for the girls' Volendam and boys' Markum and Urk costumes. She was excited because the boys' Urk, which previously came in only three fabrics, now is available in nine. "I love every costume and think that each one is unique," she said. "Our goal at the style show is to show them the different ways that they can make the costume their own."
Jipping and other costume directors look for dancers who have tailored costumes to fit their personality. "I'm hoping the show goes well and that each dancer can see three or four costumes they could enjoy wearing."
First-year Dutch Dance Coordinator Judy Tuinenga will moderate the style show, offering historical details about each costume. "The show is worthwhile for anyone involved in Tulip Time, especially those who might be in a position of contact with tourists and visitors," Tuinenga said. "This is a great place to pick up information about Dutch heritage and history of the costumes." She said she is interested in Dutch history and culture, which makes her a natural fit for the job. She also works with information volunteers for the festival and believes the Dutch dancers are what bring many tourists to town.
"To me, the Dutch dancers just bring to life a picture of provincial Holland," Tuinenga said. "It's such a privilege to have that in our community." The biannual community dancers program also kicks off this month with two dozen adults who did not klompen dance in high school.
